Their Human Touch
by Carol M. Sherman
Unseen, unknown, unexpected and feared,
A cloaked enemy attacks our bodies, hearts and minds.
Seeking out the vulnerable and weaking the strong, without discrimination,
Societies’ life’s norm is abandoned and despairingly left behind.
We reside within the walls of our own containment.
Distant from those infirmed who may not return to their homes.
Relying upon strangers to care, to protect, to feed, to pray, and to heal them.
Living indeterminant futures that exist within the viral domes.
Such are the battles that create our heroes.
To move to the frontline to protect those they do not know.
Using all their knowledge and instincts to ease the suffering and bring hope,
Hiding their fears to attend their sacred charges’ invisible foes.
The afflicted numbers grow beyond all capacities
But the human engine delivers what’s needed to outside the walls.
With finite strength of the heroes inside, tested to prove their enduring mettle,
Resting to muse the corrected world state against past recall.
Separated from their own world and focused on the sick,
The heroes treating the infirmed within the same walls and glass.
Concealing their pain hidden by masks that cannot mask their empathies,
They too touch the barriers through which their love is to pass.
Uncertain, the windows and doors open, because they must.
Opening safe harbors and traversing to reestablish humanity’s bonds,
Now noble heroes return to altered status with heightened sense of obscurity,
Who collectively spun a changed world, with readiness to respond.
